Grade band: 1
Lesson purpose
Give first-grade learners a single exploration framework for insects, the solar system, communities, friendship, and ocean life. Students use technology primarily to observe, document, create, and communicate.
Learning objectives
- Identify basic insect body parts and describe a simple life cycle.
- Name major planets or identify the Sun and planets at an age-appropriate level.
- Explain what makes a community and identify community roles.
- Describe qualities of a good friend and communicate those ideas through a story.
- Identify common ocean animals and describe one adaptation or characteristic.
Teacher preparation
Prepare photo sets, short child-friendly videos, simple digital drawing tools, maps/globes, and teacher-curated reference pages or videos.
Lesson sequence
- Insect lab: Students label a simple insect diagram and sequence a life cycle. They record one observation about how the insect changes.
- Space lab: Students make a simple solar-system strip or digital “planet postcard†with size/order facts appropriate to the class level.
- Community builders: Students design a model community with homes, services, green space, and one rule that helps people live together.
- Friendship story: Students describe a helpful friend behavior and create a short illustrated or recorded story showing it.
- Ocean explorers: Students choose an ocean animal, identify where it lives, and create a fact card with one body feature or behavior that helps it survive.
Student product
A five-page “Young Explorer†book with one digital or paper-supported page per topic.
Assessment
Use picture-based rubrics for science/social-studies accuracy, communication, sequencing, and participation.
Differentiation & accessibility
Allow oral answers, teacher scribing, tracing, audio narration, and small-group reteaching. Extension: compare two animals or design an improved community feature.
Technology integration
Use any currently available classroom tools that fit the task: a learning-management system or shared folder, presentation software, spreadsheet/charting tools, digital maps, classroom cameras, audio/video recording, interactive whiteboards, or accessibility features such as speech-to-text and text-to-speech. The activity should remain instructionally sound even when a particular brand or platform changes.
