Vocabulary: Learn, Use, and Explain New Words
Suggested grade range: 1–4 Subjects: Reading, Vocabulary, Oral Language, Writing Time: Short daily sessions across a week
Learning Objectives
- Learn the meaning and pronunciation of new vocabulary words.
- Recognize and use words in meaningful sentences.
- Connect new words to examples, non-examples, pictures, and related words.
- Explain a word's meaning rather than relying only on memorized recognition.
Vocabulary Routine
- Introduce: Select a small set of useful words from current reading or content instruction. Say each word, explain it in student-friendly language, and provide a sentence.
- Connect: Students draw, act out, sort, or match words with pictures and examples. Older students can identify synonyms, antonyms, or related words when appropriate.
- Practice: Use partner reading, oral rehearsal, sentence completion, word cards, or a vocabulary game. Color may be used to organize cards, but it is not necessary to claim that color “shocks the brain” or causes whole-word learning.
- Use: Students write or say original sentences and use the words in a short discussion or response.
- Review: Revisit the same words on later days with brief retrieval activities.
Cross-Age Tutoring
An older student can quiz a younger student, read a word aloud, ask for an explanation, and give supportive feedback. The younger student should do the thinking and responding rather than simply repeating answers.
Assessment
For Grade 1, assess oral recognition plus the ability to explain or use selected words. For older students, ask for definitions, examples, and original sentences. Record which words need additional instruction.
