Oceans 3: Mapping the World's Oceans
Grade 1 objective: Locate the Atlantic Ocean on a world map. Grade 3 objective: Locate and name the five oceans.
Time: 2 sessions Subjects: Geography, Science, Language Arts, Cross-Age Learning
Learning Objectives
- Locate the Atlantic Ocean using a world map.
- Identify and label the five oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic.
- Use map features such as labels, symbols, and relative location.
- Communicate geographic information through a map, mural, or short presentation.
Materials
Large floor or wall map; individual world maps; blank map outlines; colored pencils; atlases or teacher-selected digital maps; optional ocean-animal images.
Procedure
- Map warm-up: Review land and water and identify North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica as appropriate for the grade.
- Locate: Grade 1 students locate the Atlantic using neighboring continents as reference points. Grade 3 students locate all five oceans.
- Map practice: Students label a blank map. Older students use latitude/longitude or relative location to identify teacher-selected ocean locations.
- Collaborative product: Create an ocean mural or map. Require each label to be geographically accurate.
- Communication: Students create a short poem, caption, or factual paragraph about one ocean. Creative writing should be clearly distinguishable from factual information.
Assessment
Grade 1: locate and label the Atlantic Ocean. Grade 3: correctly name and locate the five oceans.
Differentiation
Use color-coded maps, large-print labels, tactile map materials, partner support, and oral responses. Provide a labeled reference map for students who need one.
Cross-Age Tutoring
Older students can help younger students locate places by asking guiding questions rather than simply giving the answer. Both students should have an identifiable learning task.
