Oceans: An Interdisciplinary Ocean Study
Suggested grades: 3–6, adaptable Time: 3–5 sessions Subjects: Science, Geography, Mathematics, Writing, Art
Overview: The original collection includes ocean geography, travel mathematics, writing, science experiments, map skills, ocean ecology, art, music, and an ocean-voyage planning activity. This revision keeps those strands but replaces fixed “learning-style” categories with a coherent interdisciplinary project.
Learning Objectives
- Use maps to locate oceans and calculate or compare distances using an appropriate scale.
- Explain selected characteristics of ocean environments.
- Apply mathematics to a fictional voyage budget or travel plan.
- Communicate research findings in writing and visual form.
Project Sequence
- Geography: Label a world map with the five oceans. Identify a proposed voyage route and discuss relative distance.
- Mathematics: Give students a teacher-created voyage budget with fuel, food, supplies, and travel costs. Students calculate totals and compare two routes. Keep the scenario fictional rather than implying that the figures are current travel prices.
- Science: Research one ocean habitat or animal. Students identify habitat conditions, adaptations, and feeding relationships using reliable sources.
- Writing: Students write either a factual ocean report or a clearly labeled fictional voyage narrative. Include a planning draft and revision.
- Art: Create a scientifically informed ocean mural or picture book. Labels should distinguish factual information from creative elements.
- Presentation: Groups present their route, one mathematical finding, and one researched ocean fact.
Assessment
Use a simple rubric covering map accuracy, mathematical reasoning, factual accuracy, organization, and communication. Include an individual reflection so group work does not hide individual understanding.
Teacher Note
Use current maps and reliable ocean-science sources. Replace old geography software or recorded media with whatever current resources the school already supports.
