Friendship

Cross-Age / Multiple Intelligences Lesson Plan

Friendship: Reading, Writing, and Cooperation

Suggested grade range: 1–3   Subjects: Literature, Writing, Art, Music, Social Skills   Time: 2 sessions

Literature: Use a teacher-selected Frog and Toad story by Arnold Lobel or another appropriate friendship story.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify actions that help characters cooperate and solve problems.
  • Use details from a story to describe a character or friendship.
  • Write or dictate a short personal response.
  • Work cooperatively to create and explain a class product.

Procedure

  1. Read: Read the selected story aloud. Pause to ask what each character wants, what problem occurs, and how the characters respond.
  2. Notice friendship behaviors: Students sort examples such as listening, taking turns, helping, keeping a promise, apologizing, and solving disagreements respectfully.
  3. Writing: Students write or dictate a short dialogue or journal entry describing one helpful friendship behavior and a situation in which it could be used.
  4. Visual response: Create a class mural showing several examples of cooperation. Require students to explain what each picture demonstrates.
  5. Music option: Create a short rhythm or song using words from the lesson. Keep the musical activity focused on vocabulary and communication rather than performance quality.
  6. Role-play: In pairs, students act out a simple classroom problem and demonstrate two possible ways to resolve it.

Assessment

Students identify at least two helpful friendship behaviors and support one with an example from the story or classroom scenario.

Differentiation

Provide sentence starters, picture choices, oral response options, partner reading, and vocabulary cards. Students may draw and dictate instead of writing independently.
