Software Integrated Lesson Plans - Word Games

Grade 3 Software Integrated Lesson Plan

Word Games: Vocabulary Development

Grade range: 3-12 and adult learners, with word difficulty adjusted to the students

Subjects: English, Vocabulary, Reading, Writing

Purpose

Students build useful vocabulary by learning word meanings, pronunciation, spelling, word parts, and usage. The lesson combines explicit vocabulary instruction with short digital practice activities.

Current Software Options: Quizlet or Wordwall

Build a Quizlet set when students need flashcard review, written practice, or collaborative Quizlet Live review. Build a Wordwall activity when students would benefit from matching, sorting, anagrams, quizzes, sentence completion, or another short game format. Use the digital activity for targeted practice, then return students to authentic reading and writing.

Learning Objectives

  • Determine and explain the meaning of new words.
  • Pronounce and spell target words accurately when appropriate.
  • Use new words correctly in context.
  • Recognize useful roots, prefixes, suffixes, and word relationships.
  • Maintain a personal vocabulary record and review words over time.

Five-Part Vocabulary Routine

  1. Introduce: Select a small set of important words from current reading or content instruction.
  2. Explain: Give a student-friendly definition, pronunciation, examples, and meaningful context.
  3. Connect: Students identify synonyms, antonyms, examples, nonexamples, word parts, or related concepts as appropriate.
  4. Practice: Use Quizlet or Wordwall for a brief retrieval or game-based activity.
  5. Apply and review: Students use the words in speaking and writing and revisit them during later lessons.

Vocabulary Research

Students may investigate a word's origin, related words, or specialized meaning in a content area. They should record the source used and explain how the additional information helps them understand the word.

Act It Out

Teams select words that can be represented through movement. One student acts while classmates identify the word and then use it in a sentence. Avoid words whose meanings cannot be communicated accurately through acting alone.

Personal Word Bank

Students keep a notebook or digital list containing the word, student-friendly meaning, pronunciation if useful, an example sentence, and a later review entry. Encourage students to add words encountered in authentic reading rather than simply collecting large lists.

Assessment

  • Brief oral or written retrieval checks.
  • Digital practice results when available.
  • Sentence completion using the target word accurately.
  • Short writing tasks requiring several target words.
  • Periodic cumulative review of previously taught vocabulary.

Teacher Note

The software is a practice environment. Students should demonstrate that they can use the vocabulary correctly outside the game or digital activity.
