Spelling Activities
Grade range: K–6, adjusted to developmental level
Subjects: Spelling, word study, writing
Rainbow Words
Time: 10–15 minutes
Students work in groups of three. Each student uses a different colored pencil or crayon. Everyone writes the same target word on a separate sheet. Students pass the paper, not the writing tool, to the next student, who traces the word once. After three passes, each paper contains the word in several colors.
How to Make the Activity Instructionally Stronger
- Say the word before writing it and identify the spelling feature being studied.
- After the tracing activity, cover the word and have students write it independently.
- Use the word in a sentence or short response.
- Review the word again on a later day rather than treating the colorful tracing as proof of mastery.
Variation: Pattern Rainbow
Use the activity with a group of words sharing a spelling pattern. After tracing, students circle the common pattern and explain what the words have in common.
Assessment
Check individual spelling through brief dictation or authentic writing. The purpose of the activity is practice and attention to spelling patterns; mastery should be determined through independent performance over time.
