The Doorbell Rang: Sharing, Fractions, and Fair Distribution
Grade: 4 Subjects: Literature, Mathematics, Writing Time: 2 class periods
Literature: The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze how the number of people sharing affects the amount each person receives.
- Represent equal sharing with fractions, division, diagrams, and equations.
- Explain mathematical reasoning in writing.
- Retell a story using its important events and relationships.
Procedure
- Read: Read the story and create a sequence chart of what changes each time additional children arrive.
- Model: Use counters, paper shapes, or drawings to model equal sharing. Connect the model to division and fractions.
- Guided practice: Give scenarios such as 24 objects shared equally among 3, 4, 6, or 8 people. Students represent each situation with an equation and picture.
- Problem writing: Students write three original sharing problems, solve them, and check that the numbers make sense.
- Literary response: Students explain how the changing number of people changes the mathematical problem in the story.
- Creative option: Create a story illustration, sequence chart, or short retelling. A food activity may be used only if the school approves it and handles allergies and food safety appropriately.
Assessment
Score one multi-step sharing problem for mathematical accuracy, representation, and explanation. Collect the student's original problem and solution.
Extension
Ask students to compare situations in which sharing is equal with situations in which a remainder occurs. Have them explain what the remainder means in the context of the problem.
