Cooperative Learning Start-Up: Find Your Shoe Partner
Grade/age: Early elementary Subjects: Cooperation, Classification, Communication Time: 30–45 minutes
Learning Objectives
- Follow a multi-step classroom procedure.
- Cooperate with classmates during a noncompetitive search task.
- Sort objects according to observable attributes.
- Explain the rule used for a classification group.
Materials and Safety
Use only shoes that students can safely remove and that do not create a hygiene or accessibility problem. An alternative is to use classroom objects or picture cards. Students should never be required to remove footwear for medical, religious, cultural, or accessibility reasons.
Procedure
- Collect one shoe from participating students or use teacher-provided shoe/picture cards. Mix the items.
- Explain that students must locate the matching shoe without taking someone else's chosen item or racing.
- When partners are found, students sit together and complete a short shared reading or conversation task.
- Repeat the activity by sorting shoes or picture cards by one attribute: closure type, material, color, style, or another observable characteristic.
- Challenge students to create a new sorting rule and explain why each item belongs in a group.
Assessment
Observe whether students follow directions, work cooperatively, identify a matching pair, and explain at least one classification rule.
Differentiation
Provide picture cards, reduce the number of items, allow a student to work with an adult or partner, and permit students to participate without removing footwear.
