Literature: Never Mail an Elephant by Mike Thaler Time: 2–3 sessions Subjects: Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Communication
Learning Objectives
- Identify beginning, middle, and end or first, next, and finally.
- Retell a story in logical order.
- Write a correctly organized personal or informational letter.
- Explain basic steps in how mail is prepared and delivered.
Procedure
- Read and sequence: Read selected portions and provide event cards for students to arrange. Ask students to justify the order with details from the text.
- Sequence words: Model first, next, then, and finally. Students use them in an oral retelling and short written response.
- Letter writing: Model the parts of a friendly letter. Students write to a classmate, another grade, or a teacher. A classroom mail exchange can be used instead of outside pen pals.
- Stamp and envelope design: Students design a fictional stamp and address a practice envelope. Emphasize that the artwork is creative while addressing information must be accurate.
- Mail system: Create a temporary classroom postal system. Students sort practice mail by classroom or teacher name and discuss how organization helps a system work.
- Community connection: If appropriate, invite a postal employee or use a teacher-selected current resource to explain how mail is processed. A field trip is optional and should follow school procedures.
Assessment
