OCEANS

Oceans

Grade K Cross Age Tutoring / Multiple Intelligences Lesson Plan

Theme: OCEANS

Grade Level: K-2

Subjects: Science, Reading, Art

Time: 3-5 class periods

Learning Objectives

  • Kindergarten: Identify several animals that live in ocean habitats.
  • Grade 2: Construct and explain a simple food chain using ocean organisms.
  • Use photographs and nonfiction sources to identify living things.
  • Explain that animals depend on other organisms and their environments for food and shelter.

Vocabulary

ocean, habitat, organism, food chain, producer, consumer, predator, prey

Materials

  • Ocean animal photographs or books
  • Large paper for a mural
  • Labels and drawing materials
  • Simple food-chain picture cards
  • Optional ocean map

Procedure

1. Explore. Show photographs of ocean organisms. Students identify what they recognize and ask questions about unfamiliar animals.

2. Read and Sort. Read age-appropriate nonfiction about several ocean animals. Kindergarten students sort animals into simple categories such as “lives in the ocean” and “does not live in the ocean.” Grade 2 students sort organisms according to their roles in a simple food chain.

3. Build the Mural. Students create an ocean mural and place organisms in appropriate locations. Add labels and simple habitat features.

4. Build Food Chains. Grade 2 students use picture cards to arrange a few simple food chains. Require students to explain the direction of the arrows rather than merely memorizing a sequence.

5. Partner Story. Students write or dictate a short nonfiction story about one marine animal. Encourage factual statements rather than imaginary claims presented as facts.

6. Share. Students use the mural to teach another student or younger class one fact about an ocean organism.

Assessment

  • Kindergarten students identify at least 3-5 ocean animals.
  • Grade 2 students create and explain a simple food chain.
  • Student can use a picture, model, or oral explanation to communicate a science idea.

Teacher Notes

The original SeaWorld field-trip suggestion is optional and should not be required. A local aquarium, marine science center, virtual field trip, school library collection, or NOAA resource can serve the same instructional purpose. NOAA's elementary Ocean Odyssey materials include lessons on ocean animals, habitats, food, currents, and other ocean concepts for grades 2-5. citeturn1search9

The original file also contained a separate Olympics measurement lesson. That is not part of the Oceans lesson and should be treated as a separate resource rather than merged into this lesson.
