Lesson: Dental Health and Healthy Teeth
Grade Levels
Kindergarten: Identify basic habits that help keep teeth and gums healthy.
Grade 3: Describe basic tooth structure and explain daily practices that help prevent tooth decay.
Learning Objectives
- Explain why regular toothbrushing and dental care are important.
- Identify basic parts of a tooth, including enamel, dentin, pulp, and root, at an age-appropriate level.
- Describe how daily habits and professional dental care contribute to oral health.
Key Vocabulary
tooth, enamel, dentin, pulp, root, gums, plaque, cavity, fluoride, dentist
Materials
- Large tooth diagram or model
- Large demonstration toothbrush
- Drawing paper or science notebook
- Optional: prepared tooth model for labeling
Important Safety Note
Do not use a student's tooth or place a tooth in soda as a classroom experiment. The original lesson included a tooth-in-Coke activity; that demonstration is not necessary to teach dental decay and can be replaced with a teacher-prepared model, diagram, or discussion of how acids produced by oral bacteria contribute to tooth decay.
Lesson Procedure
- Connect: Ask students what they already do to care for their teeth. Reinforce that dental care is a routine health practice rather than a test of whether someone is “good” or “bad” at taking care of themselves.
- Read: Use an appropriate dental-health picture book, including the original suggestion of a Mercer Mayer book if it is available and appropriate for the class.
- Model: Demonstrate brushing motions with a large model. Discuss brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and the importance of adult supervision for young children as appropriate.
- Explore tooth structure: Students examine a tooth diagram or model and label the major parts appropriate to their grade level.
- Cause-and-effect discussion: Explain that cavities are preventable but can develop when bacteria, sugars, and acids interact over time. Use a diagram rather than a decay experiment.
- Dental-care plan: Students create a simple picture guide or written plan showing healthy daily dental habits and regular dental visits.
Assessment
Kindergarten: Create and explain a picture showing healthy tooth-care habits.
Grade 3: Label a tooth diagram and explain several practices that support oral health.
Differentiation
- Use a large visual model and repeated oral language for younger students.
- Allow drawing, oral explanation, or labeling rather than requiring an extended written response.
- Extend Grade 3 learning by having students explain how fluoride, dental sealants, and regular dental care can help prevent cavities.
Teacher Note
Current CDC guidance emphasizes prevention, including brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and professional dental care. The original lesson's calendar, model, labeling, and dental-visit ideas have been retained while replacing the tooth-in-soda activity with a safer and more instructionally useful approach.
