Brazilian Legends: Literature, Place, and Cultural Research
Grade/age: 3–5 Subject: Literature, Geography, Social Studies, Art Time: 2–3 class periods
Overview: Students study a Brazilian legend while distinguishing literary tradition from factual information about Brazil. Research should focus on a specific place, community, or documented tradition rather than treating Brazil as culturally uniform.
Learning Objectives
- Identify characteristics of a legend or traditional story.
- Locate Brazil and the region connected to the selected story when reliable sources identify it.
- Distinguish information learned from the story from information supported by factual sources.
- Compare sources and communicate findings through writing, art, or presentation.
Procedure
- Read: Read an age-appropriate Brazilian legend. Discuss setting, characters, problem, and ending.
- Literature study: Explain that a traditional legend can be meaningful literature without being a scientific or historical explanation of every event.
- Map: Locate Brazil and, when supported by sources, the specific region associated with the story.
- Research: Students investigate one factual topic connected to the lesson, such as geography, a region, language, food, ecosystem, or documented tradition. Record sources.
- Create: Make a story map, illustrated report, patterned artwork, or presentation that clearly labels literary details separately from researched facts.
- Share: Present one literary detail and one fact supported by a source.
Assessment
Assess sequence, distinction between legend and fact, map understanding, and source use.
Language Supports
Preteach 4–6 academic words and use sentence frames such as “The legend says ____” and “The source explains ____.” IES/WWC recommends intensive academic vocabulary, integrated oral and written language instruction, and structured writing opportunities for English learners. citeturn0search0turn0search12
Teacher Note
Do not ask students to imitate a Brazilian accent, costume, dance, or religious practice. If music, food, or cultural practices are included, use a specific documented source and identify the particular tradition or community.
