Animal Makers: Cooperative Animal Design
Grade/age: K–2 Subject: Science, Art, Cooperative Learning Time: 30–45 minutes
Overview: Students work in small groups to create an animal from paper while practicing planning, communication, observation, and science vocabulary.
Learning Objectives
- Identify an animal and describe at least two observable characteristics.
- Use simple vocabulary such as body, covering, legs, wings, habitat, or food.
- Contribute an idea, listen to a teammate, and help complete a shared product.
- Explain how one animal feature helps the animal live.
Materials
Paper sacks; construction paper; large paper; crayons or washable markers; child-safe scissors and glue; optional animal picture cards.
Procedure
- Engage: Show two or three animal photographs. Ask what students notice about body parts and coverings.
- Plan: Groups select an animal and decide which features must be recognizable before beginning the model.
- Create: Groups build the animal. Encourage students to explain ideas and share the work rather than allowing one student to do everything.
- Share: Each student contributes one observation, vocabulary word, or explanation.
- Individual check: Students draw or identify one feature and complete: “This is the _____. It helps the animal _____.”
Assessment
Check vocabulary accuracy and whether students can connect a body feature with a basic function.
Differentiation
Provide pre-cut pieces, larger paper, picture vocabulary cards, and verbal, drawn, or pointing responses. Offer tearing and arranging for students who need less fine-motor demand.
Extension
Compare two animals and identify one shared feature and one difference. Older students can add habitat and food source.
