Grades: 4–8, adaptable
Subjects: Geography, Social Studies, Literature, Language Arts, Mathematics
Time: 4–6 class periods

Learning Objectives

  • Locate selected African countries and geographic regions.
  • Explain how geography, climate, resources, and history affect settlement and daily life.
  • Research a specific country or community using reliable sources.
  • Recognize that Africa is a continent containing many distinct countries, peoples, languages, and cultures.
  • Distinguish a folktale from factual geographic or historical information.

Procedure

  1. Map first: Locate several countries and major physical features.
  2. Research: Select a specific country or identified cultural community. Research geography, language, food, arts, history, and one contemporary feature. Record sources.
  3. Literature: Read Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears? by Verna Aardema, if used. Study it as a folktale and literary work, not as a factual description of Africa.
  4. Context: Investigate the specific tradition connected to the story when reliable information is available.
  5. Mathematics: Use a particular version of Mancala as an optional strategy and mathematics activity. Identify its specific cultural/geographic context.
  6. Communication: Create a factual country/geography brochure with a map and sourced information.
  7. Reflection: Share one important discovery and one misconception corrected through research.

Assessment

Assess map accuracy, source use, factual research, distinction between literature and fact, and presentation quality.

Teacher Note

Avoid treating “Africa” as a single culture. Whenever possible, name the country, people, language, or tradition being studied.
